History Of Purana Qila Delhi

It was initially believed that Purana Qila was built in 1533 by the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Humayun undertook the restoration work of the ancient site known as Indraprastha and gave it a new name, Dinpanah. The impressive walls and entrances of the Purana Qila were constructed under the supervision of Humayun in the early part of the 16th century.

However, some change occurred when Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun in 1540, he renamed it as Shergarh. During his 5 year rule, he introduced various structural additions to the complex of fort. The Mosque and Sher Mandal were constructed during this period by Sher Shah Suri. The present structure of Purana Qila is believed to have been constructed by Sher Shah Suri, unfortunately it remained unfinished after the death of Sher Shah Suri in 1545. After the death of Sher Shah, the fort went back to Humayun.

During the second world war, around 3000 Japanese people found shelter at this fort. During the Partition of India in 1947, the fort served as the refugee camp. Later, in the 1970’s, National School of Drama began using the fort for its plays like Tughlaq, Andha Yug and Sultan Razia. Purana Qila became a popular spot for cultural events and concerts with time.

The recent excavation of the fort in 2013-14 by Archaeological Survey of India indicates that the fort’s origin can be traced back to the 3rd century BC during the era of Pre-mauryan Empire. In earlier times, Archaeologist B B Lal oversaw excavation and gathered evidence that revealed similarities in the remains discovered at all the locations mentioned in the Mahabharata. During excavation, the Archaeological Survey of India also found various pieces like pottery and objects, which are now on display at the Archaeological Museum in Purana Qila.
