About India Gate Delhi

India Gate Delhi, also known as the All India War memorial is a 42 metre high giant gate located on Kartavya Path in New Delhi. The India Gate was designed by architect Edwin Lutyens in 1921 and looks similar to iconic monuments such as the Arc de Triomphe in France, the Gateway of India in Mumbai and the Arch of Constantine in Rome. It serves as the tribute to the 84,000 Indian Army Soldiers who made ultimate sacrifice during World War I (1914-21) in regions including France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and various parts of the Near and Far East, including the Third Anglo-Afghan war. The monument has inscribed the names of 13,300 servicemen on its surface.

India Gate Delhi is surrounded by lush green and well-maintained gardens. It is a favourite spot for Delhiites to enjoy summer evenings and Sunday picnics with their friends and families. People visit India Gate with a true sense of patriotism. India Gate is one of the best tourist attractions with a children’s park and boating club. History Of India Gate Delhi

The impressive structure of India Gate was built by the Imperial War Graves Commission or IWCG, established in 1917 with the purpose to build war memorials and graves for soldiers who died during the First World War. The construction of this war memorial began on 10 February 1921. It was designed by a famous English Architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and its ceremony was attended by the Duke of Connaught, Delegates and Officers of the British Indian Army, Imperial Service Troops and the Viceroy.

India Gate construction took 10 years to complete and on 12 February 1931, Viceroy Lord Irwin inaugurated India Gate. This 42 metre tall war memorial stands like an archway in the centre of a crossroad and represents the sacrifices made by Indian Soldiers. India Gate is dedicated to all the soldiers who lost their lives during the war so that the future generations would remember their sacrifice and love for the country.

Today, India Gate Delhi stands as the symbol of India’s history, courage and unity of its people. It has become a central landmark in Delhi where people can gather to pay homage to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Architecture Of India Gate Delhi

India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens who was also a member of IWGC. India Gate’s architectural style is often compared to famous structures like the Gateway of India in Mumbai, the Arch of Constantine in Rome and the Arc De Triomphe in Paris. India Gate’s architecture is similar to the Cenotaph in London which doesn’t have any religious or cultural decorations, making it a memorial that’s not associated with any religion and is open to everyone.

India Gate is 42 metres tall and is built with red sandstone of Bharatpur. It stands on a stone base and has different levels that lead to its current shape. The whole area around India Gate is shaped like a hexagon and covers a space of 306,000 square metres. Its complex is surrounded by beautiful gardens.

About 150 metres to the east of India Gate, there’s a 72 foot long canopy which was inspired by a pavilion from Mahabalipuram that’s over 6 centuries old. This canopy has four columns holding up a dome. Underneath, there’s a pedestal with “GEORGE V R I” written on it. There used to be a 50 foot tall marble statue of King George V under this canopy, but in 1960, it was moved and placed with other British statues in Coronation park.

In 1972, when Bangladesh was fighting for its freedom, a special structure was built under India Gate. It’s made of black marble plinth with a reversed L1A1 rifle, capped by a war helmet surrounded by four eternal flames. This special structure is called the Amar Jawan Jyoti. It was officially inaugurated during India’s 23rd Republic Day by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1972. Amar Jawan Jyoti is a memorial gravestone dedicated to the known or unknown Indian Martyrs who lost their life protecting the country. The Prime Minister visits India Gate on every Republic day to pay tributes to the Amar Jawan Jyoti, after which Republic Day parade starts.
