About Lotus Temple Delhi
Lotus temple Delhi is a Bahai house of Worship which is also known as Kamal Mandir. It is one of the seven Major Bahai’s temple in the world. Known for it’s Lotus Like Design, it was built in 1986 and since that it is fascinating visitors with it’s Structural Beauty. The Lush Greenery around the temple add further to its beauty. The Building comprises of 27 free standing marble clad which looks like petals which arranged in bundle of three from nine sides which has nine Doors which is over 34 meters of height that opens into central Hall which has a seating capacity of over 1300 people.
Lotus Temple is open to people of all religions. The temple is not dedicated to any one Deity, but it stands on the principle of Unity, Peace, Meditation and Humanity among people of different countries, religion and race. The Lotus shaped Design of the temple also means the same as Lotus Flower is commonly used in many religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and others. It has been recognised and appreciated throughout the world. The Lotus temple Delhi is visited by around 10,000 people on a daily basis which makes it one of the most visited tourist Attractions in the world.
Architecture Of Lotus Temple Delhi
Lotus Temple Delhi was built by the Iranian architect Fariborz Sahba. He has won many awards for this architectural masterpiece. The temple is designed in the shape of Lotus, as the flower Lotus is often associated with Purity, sacredness, spirituality and knowledge. Lotus has a spiritual significance in India. Another reason is that, the flower “Lotus” is common to many Major religions of the world and hence it represents harmony and oneness.
Lotus temple is built with Marble in the shape of Half opened Lotus with 27 Petals arranged in bundle of three from nine sides. The nine doors of the temple opens to the central hall which has a seating capacity of 1300 and can accommodate around 2500 people. The temple has been designed in such a way that it didn’t need any external light for the prayer hall. The light gets filtered through the inner fold of the Lotus petal and spreads throughout the hall acting as a Natural Light. The roof is made up of Glass and steel to provide protection from rain and dust and allowing light to pass.
The temple is spread in over 26 acres of area and has nine beautiful poles and Lush greenery which adds to the beauty and glory of the entire place.
There are no altars or Pulpits inside the Lotus temple which is a common feature of all Bahai house of Worship. The Temple does not have a picture, Statue and Images on Display. A Glorious feature of the temple is the nine pools of the water surrounding the petals which gives an impression of Half blossomed Lotus in a water body and the whole structure looks mind-blowing at night when light gets on. The temple generates 120 kW of energy out of 500 kW of it’s total electricity use by Solar panels on Building which saves Rs 1,20,000 of temple every month. It is the first temple in Delhi to use Solar Panel.
The temple was designed by Fariborz Sahba while the structural design was done by Flint and Neill which is a UK Firm. The Lotus Temple Delhi’s construction work was done by Larsen & Turbo Limited ECC Construction company and took around 10 years to complete at a cost of 10 million Dollars. There were the team of around 800 engineers, technicians, artisans and workers who help in constructing the temple. It took a lot of hard work to construct the petals of the lotus flower which took continuous work of 48 hours to avoid any construction Joints.

Lotus Temple Delhi Timings
Lotus temple Timings are from 9 AM To 7 PM in summer season and 8:30 AM To 5 PM in winter season. The temple is open all days of the week except Monday. The Lotus Temple is closed every Monday.
