Agrasen ki Baoli or Ugrasen ki Baoli is an ancient step well situated on the Halley Road near Connaught place in Delhi. The Baoli was built during the medieval period and features a unique architecture consisting of 108 steps leading down to the water level with several chambers and galleries around them. As there is np historical result as to who built this, therefore it is believed to have been built during 14th century and features a distinctive architectural design that has been the subject of much admiration and interest over the years.

History Of Agrasen Ki Baoli
There is no clear historical record about when the impressive Agrasen ki Baoli was Built and by whom. However, many historians suggest that it was constructed during the period of the Mahabharata by the legendary king of Agroha, Maharaja Agrasen. The Baoli get its name from him. It was rebuilt again in 1947 by the people of the Agrawal community who are known to be the descendants of Maharaja Agrasen. Architectural Features of the stepwell also indicates that it was reconstructed during the Tughlaq Dynasty (1321-1414) or Lodhi Dynasty (1451-1526) reign over Delhi.
At the time of it’s construction, Agrasen ki Baoli served as vital source of water for the local community which was largely Agrarian. It is believed that women of those times used to assemble at this stepwell and the cool ambiance of the Baoli providing them with the perfect spot to relax and spend some moments away from the scorching heat outside. It was also used for a variety of other purposes including religious rituals, social gatherings and as a shelter for travellers and Pilgrims.
Agrasen Baoli is one of the most Important Baoli of Delhi. This historical monument is protected by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological sites and remains Act of 1958. The Baoli is 15 metres wide and 60 metres long.

The Baoli is a Stepwell which is commonly found in India and is designed to collect and store rainwater. Agrasen Ki Baoli Comprises of 108 steps that lead down to water levels with several chambers and galleries surrounding the well. The Steps are arranged in a linear pattern, with each level providing access to the water below. At the bottom of the well, there is a small pool of water that is believed to be connected to an Underground Source.
The Architectural style of Agrasen ki Baoli is simple yet elegant, with clean lines and sense of proportion that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The Baoli is made primarily of stone with intricate carvings and motifs adorning the walls and galleries. One of the most striking features of Agrasen ki Baoli is the symmetry of its design. The well was also designed to ensure that the water remained cool and fresh even during the hottest months of the year.
A circular well exists at the northern end of this stepwell. It measures 8 metres in diameter and remain dry for the most part of the year. When it is filled with water in the Monsoon season, the water level rises to a height of around 4 or 5 feet. The well remains shielded with an iron grill that prevents anyone from intentionally or accidentally falling into the water. It is also linked by shafts to the rectangular passage as the water level oof the Baoli rises, the passage also gets filled with water.
A small Mosque exists at the South West corner of the Agrasen ki Baoli Complex. A triple arched entrance leads you to the Mosque. These arches are supported by four sandstone pillars, one of which had collapsed long ago. These pillars are ornamented structures that add to the aesthetic beauty of the whole structure.
Haunted Story Of Agrasen Ki Baoli
There is a common question everybody has: “Is Agrasen ki Baoli Haunted?” But the answer to this question is not simple as one doesn’t have any facts to support if place is Haunted or Not but as a Safety measure, the Baoli is kept dry and waterless now. Also, there are hundred of bats who have made it their home and their chirping can be heard while stepping down in the monument.
There are several Ghost stories associated with Agrasen ki Baoli. According to locals, the well is said to be haunted by Spirits of the past who still resides in the chambers and galleries surrounding the well.
One of the most popular stories is that of a young woman who is said to have fallen into the well and drowned. According to legend, her spirit still roams the galleries and visitors have reported seeing a young woman in white wandering around the well, especially at Night. Some have even reported hearing her screams or feeling a cold breeze, despite there being no wind.
Another story is that of a group of travellers who are said to have sought shelter in a well during storm. According to the Legend, the group was never seen again and their spirits are said to haunt the galleries to this day.
There are also stories of people experiencing strange and unexplainable occurrences when visiting the Baoli. Some Visitors have reported feeling a sudden drop in temperature or feeling an inexplicable sense of dread while exploring the well.
Despite the Ghost stories, Agrasen ki Baoli remains an important historical and cultural site in Delhi attracting visitors who come to explore it’s Unique architecture, rich history and mysterious legends.
