The Sheetla Mata temple is dedicated to the wife of Guru Dronacharya, Kripi/Kirpai, also Lalitha or Lalita. Mata Sheetla used to live in Keshopur village near Delhi. Her husband, Dronacharya, used to visit her daily at Keshopur from his Gurugram ashram. Sheetla Mata devoted herself to looking after sick children, especially those suffering from smallpox. People used to call her ‘Mata’ out of affection and respect. After her death, a temple was built by villagers in her honour and she was remembered as Mata Sheetla or Mata Masani i.e. ‘The goddess of Smallpox’

It is believed that Three centuries ago, Masani mother appeared in a dream to Chaudhri Singh Ram, also known as Singha, a land owner in Gurgaon village. She expressed her wish to move from Keshopur to Gurgaon and asked Singha to build a place for her. Singha fulfilled her wish by erecting a temple near the Gurugram Bhim Kund, South of Gurugram village and named it Sheetla Mata temple.

It is said that even after Singha had brought and installed the Goddess Masani, after her own heart’s desire at village Gurgaon, the residents of Keshopur continued to dispute the claim of Gurgaon folks. However, during Begum Samru’s reign as Governor of Jharsa, her child contracted smallpox and was miraculously cured after being consecrated before goddess Masani in Gurgaon. This event finally settled the controversy, confirming that Masani had moved to Gurgaoan.

The current temple was constructed in the 18th century by Hindu Jat King Jawahar Singh of Bharatpur to commemorate his victory over the Mughals, which he attributed to Sheetla Mata’s blessings. He installed a 1.25 kg gold Idol of Mata Kripi in the temple. It is said that a devotee of Singha retrieved the idol from a pond where it was dropped by a Mughal emperor.

It is also believed that Maharaja Bharatpur halted at Ballabgarh before attacking Delhi, but his horses refused to move. Astrologers advised him to worship within Gurugram’s limits. He pledged to construct a temple for Mata after conquering the Red Fort, fulfilling his vow upon victory, he constructed a permanent temple of the Mother Goddess.
