About Nahargarh Fort Jaipur
Nahargarh Fort Jaipur is situated on the Aravalli Hills, was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1734 as a summer retreat. The strong wall of the Nahargarh Fort stretched across the nearby hill till Jaigarh Fort. Nahargarh Fort forms a strong defence For Jaipur along with Jaigarh Fort and Amer Fort. The Fort was previously named ‘Sudarshangarh’ but later it became known as Nahargarh, meaning ‘abode of tigers’. It is said that the spirit of a Rathore ruler, Nahar Singh Bhomia hindered its construction until a temple for him was built inside the fort.
The Nahargarh Fort Jaipur was originally built as a safe place during attacks. The fort showcases Indo-European architecture with well-preserved structures. Tadigate has a temple dedicated to Jaipur ruler’s deity and there is another temple inside the fort, which is dedicated to the Rathore Prince Nahar Singh Bhomia. THe Madhavendra Bhawan, built by Sawai Madho Singh, was used by the royal family for summer excursions. This two-storeyed building includes suites for the king and his wives, connected by hallways with beautiful frescoes. The design of the women’s quarter has been done in a way that the king could visit any queen without others knowing.

History Of Nahargarh Fort Jaipur
In 1734, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh built Nahargarh Fort Jaipur on the ancient Aravalli Hills, the world’s oldest mountain range. The fort stands at 700 metres above sea level, and provides a stunning view of Jaipur city illuminated by lights. The fort was initially constructed as a peaceful retreat for the royal family and it was meant to safeguard the city from invaders, although it never faced any wars.
Despite its history of peace, Nahargarh Fort played a crucial role in significant events, such as treaties with Maratha forces in the 18th century and providing shelters to Europeans including the British Resident’s wife living in the region during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. In 1868, the fort was renovated under Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh and from 1883-92, various palaces were constructed at Nahargarh by Dirgh Patel at a cost of around three and a half lakh rupees. The Government of Jaipur used to fire a gunshot from this fort as a time signal until 1944. The fort was used to serve as the hunting residence of Maharajas.
Initially, The Nahargarh Fort was called ‘Sudarshangarh’ but the fort was later renamed ‘Nahargarh’ after a Rathore ruler, Nahar Singh Bhomia. It is said that his spirit was hindering the construction of the fort until a temple was built in his memory and the fort was named after his name. Architecture Of Nahargarh Fort Jaipur
The Nahargarh Fort of Jaipur is designed in the Indo-European style of architecture. The fort features an imposing entrance, called Tadigate and houses several impressive structures within its premises. The fort complex has a couple of temples including the one dedicated to Nahar Singh Bhomia and another to the deity of Jaipur’s ruler.
The fort complex also has a two-storey building, called Madhavendra Bhawan which has suites for the king and his queens which are identical. These rooms are connected by corridors which display beautiful paintings inspired by both European and Rajput style. The detailed work in these corridors and rooms is visually delightful. The king corridor was constructed in such a way that Maharaja could visit any queen without letting any other queen know which one he was visiting.
The Nahargarh Fort also has ‘Diwan-i-am’ where public meetings are held. The fort has two step wells, one outside the fort and one within the fort. The larger step well which is situated out of the fort has appeared in various bollywood movies. These wells stand out due to its uneven design.

- Jaipur Wax Museum – Jaipur wax museum is situated on the left side of the Nahargarh fort entrance. It has over 35 silicon and wax statues dedicated to Bollywood personalities, sportspersons, freedom fighters, social activists, Maharajas and Maharani of Jaipur. It was earlier known as the rest house of the soldiers- Vishram Grah and House of artillery- Shastragar.
- Sheesh Mahal – Sheesh Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors, is one-of-its-kind architectural marvel. It is the latest landmark to be added adjoining the Nahargarh fort. It is constructed using 25 million pieces of glass with Thikri, gold polish and mirror work making the fort magnificent and royal. The intricate reflections create an illusion of endless space, leaving one mesmerised.
- Madhavendra Bhawan: Madhavendra Bhawan is a two-storeyed palace built by Sawai Madho Singh. It has suites which are designed for the King and his 12 queens. All these suites are identical and connected by a corridor in such a way that the king can visit any of her queens without her other queens knowing.
- Nahargarh Baoli: Nahargarh Baoli is a mesmerising stepwell with geometrically patterned stairs leading down to an ancient water reservoir. The intricate architecture and cool ambiance offer a unique escape from the desert heat. It tells about how water used to be conserved in the earlier time.
