About Jal Mahal Jaipur
Jal Mahal Jaipur or “Water Palace” is situated in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur. The Palace is surrounded by the Aravali hills. Jal Mahal looks like a single storey building as four storeys of the palace have been submerged under the water. Therefore, it looks like the Palace is floating above the water. Jal Mahal also offers a stunning view of its surrounding landscape of Man Sagar Lake and Nahargarh Fort from its rooftop.
Jal Mahal was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in 1799. It was built to serve as the residence of the royal family but for duck hunting and party place for the king and his friends. The whole idea behind the construction of Jal Mahal was to chill and do something interesting.
Jal Mahal Jaipur is currently not open to the public for interior exploration but one can see it from lakeside or through boat ride in Man Sagar Lake. The Palace looks fascinating during sunrise and sunset, and its reflection on the Man Sagar lake looks mesmerising. Today, the Palace is one of the best tourist attractions of the city where visitors can click their pictures and have a boat or camel ride.
History Of Jal Mahal Jaipur
Jal Mahal is one of the most visited places in Jaipur. There is no record about who actually built it and when. Some believe that Maharaja Madho Singh constructed this palace in 1750 and some believe that Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh constructed it in 1799. It was built with the purpose of Summer retreat for the royal family but not for the residence of the royal family. Maharaja Madho Singh constructed it as a purpose for duck hunting & party. In the 18th century, the Palace was renovated by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber.
Over the years, Jal Mahal has become worse due to sewage and water logging issues. Therefore, the restoration work was started in the early 21st century to reclaim the palace’s former glory. However, the original terrace garden could not be restored and plans are to create a new garden inspired from the rooftop garden of Amer Palace.
Architecture Of Jal Mahal Jaipur
The beautiful Jal Mahal is surrounded by Man Sagar lakes on all sides. The Palace is a five storey structure but its four floors have submerged in the water and only one floor is above the water giving an illusion of it floating in the water. The depth of the Man Sagar Lake is 15 feet and its low lying area has a depth of 4.9 feet.
Jal Mahal is made with red sandstone, reflecting a combination of Mughal and Rajput architectural style. The Palace is spread in an area of 300 acres and has four octagonal shaped chhatris in its four corners which are in Bengali style. Jal Mahal also has a beautiful garden on its terrace, which is decorated with arched passage.
The restoration work of Jal Mahal was completed using traditional materials for Plastering, a mortal mix of lime, surkhi and sand mixed with gur (jaggery), guggal and methi (fenugreek) powder to ensure the longevity of the Palace..
