About Jama Masjid Delhi
Jama Masjid Delhi, also known as Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa means the mosque that reflects the world. The name “Jama Masjid” is believed to come from the word “Jummah” which means the holy gathering of Muslims for prayers. It is one of the largest and most renowned mosques in the country with the capacity to accommodate twenty five thousand people in its courtyard. Jama Masjid covers an approximate area of 1200 square metres, featuring three gateways, four towers and two minarets standing at the height of forty metres each.
The Mosque was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1644 and its construction was supervised by Saadullah Khan. The construction of Jama Masjid Delhi was completed in 1656 and was Inaugurated by its first Imam, Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari. Jama Masjid is situated in the heart of old Delhi, Chandni Chowk.

History Of Jama Masjid Delhi
The Jama Masjid Delhi was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan when he moved his capital from Agra to Delhi after the death of his wife. The construction of Jama Masjid was completed in 6 years between 1644 and 1656. Jama Masjid was designed by Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who passed away before its construction started in 1649.
The supervision of Jama Masjid’s construction was carried out by Saadullah Khan. It is estimated that around 5,000 workers from different backgrounds completed its construction. The cost of constructing Jama Masjid was around 1 Million Rupees at that time. Jama Masjid of Delhi was inaugurated in 1656 by Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari from Uzbekistan, who was invited to be the Shahi Imam of the mosque by Shah Jahan.
Jama Masjid was one of the last monuments constructed under Shah Jahan’s reign. It served as the royal mosque for the emperor until the end of the Mughal Period. During the Friday noon prayer, the Mughal Emperor recited the Khutba, legitimising his rule and turned the mosque into a symbol of Mughal Sovereignty in India, carrying significant political importance.
Architecture Of Jama Masjid Delhi
Jama Masjid’s architecture is truly impressive, showcasing a perfect blend of red sandstone and white marble in the Indo-Islamic Style. The mosque spans about 261 feet in length and 90 feet in width. It has three grand arched gates, three elegant marble domes and four minarets with two huge minarets with an impressive height of 40 metres. All these elements are thoughtfully designed to face in the direction of Holy Mecca.
There are three domes on the terrace of the Mosque, which are adorned with alternating stripes of black and white marble surrounding two minarets. The mosque’s vast courtyard can comfortably accommodate up to 25,000 people for collective prayers. The Mosque is on an elevated platform and can be accessed through its three gates. There is a purification tank at the centre of the courtyard which is used for washing hands and feet before praying.
Jama Masjid has a spacious prayer hall with multiple entrances and an altar for the prayer leader. The mosque proudly displays inscriptions with the detail of its rich history and connection to the reign of Shah Jahan.
