About Jaigarh Fort Jaipur
Jaigarh Fort Jaipur is situated on the Cheel Ka Teela or Hill of Eagles of the Aravalli range, overlooking Amer Fort and Maota Lake. The fort was built by Mirza Raja Jai Singh in 1726 to protect Amer fort and its nearby area from the invasion of enemies. Jaigarh Fort is named after Maharaja Jai Singh which also means ‘Victory Fort’. The fort is situated 400m above Amber Palace, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding hills.
The main attraction of Jaigarh fort is its historical cannon ‘Jaivana’ which was the world’s largest cannon on wheels, manufactured in the fort itself. The fort has two main entrances, Dungar Darwaza and Awani Darwaza. There are four palace inside the fort complex i.e. Laxmi Vilas, Lalit Mandir, Vilas Mandir and Aram Mandir with lush green gardens belonging to the royal members. The fort has 2 temples, one is Ram Harihar Temple from 10th century and Kal Bhairav Temple from 12th century.
Jaigarh Fort was built for the purpose of defence and is known to be the strongest monument in Jaipur. It was used as the military base and a storehouse of all the war amours, cannons, arms and ammunition. Jaigarh Fort and Amer Fort are connected with each other through underground passages. It is believed that a huge treasure was buried under the fort but was seized by the government of Rajasthan in the 1970s.

Jaigarh Fort’s primary purpose was to secure the Amer Fort and the palace complex within it. Jaigarh Fort and Amer Fort are connected by underground passages, allowing the safe transfer of the royal family during times of danger.
The fort played a crucial role in the history of the region, particularly during times of conflict. It served as a stronghold for the rulers of Jaipur and played a significant role in protecting the interests of the kingdom. Over the years, the fort has undergone various modifications and additions, with each ruler contributing to its legacy.
Jaigarh Fort Jaipur had also served as the residence of many kings and was also used to store weapons, artillery and ammunition of the Rajput rulers along with other military utilities which are still on display in the fort museum. The fort was also a strategic and safe place for Rajput rulers as they could hide their arms, treasure and supplies easily inside the fort without the need of going out of Amer.

Architecture Of Jaigarh Fort Jaipur
Jaigarh fort was designed by the military architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, who was also responsible for planning the city of Jaipur. The fort is spread over an area of 3 kilometres in length and 1 km in width. The fort itself is a sprawling complex with a series of courtyards, palaces and temples.
The fort is made with red sandstone in Indo-Persian style. The architecture reflects a mix of Rajput and Mughal styles, showcasing the artistic sensibilities of the era. The fort is surrounded by thick walls and watchtowers, emphasising its defensive capabilities.
