The Hauz Khas fort was built in the 14th century during the reign of Alauddin Khilji, the second ruler of the Khilji Dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. Alauddin Khilji ordered the construction of the large water tank called Hauz-i-Alai to solve the water scarcity problem faced by the residents of siri, then capital of the Delhi Sultanate.

The complex of Hauz Khas fort was further developed during the reign of Firoz Shah Tughlaq, the Sultan of the Tughlaq Dynasty in the 14th century. Firoz Shah transformed the area into a flourishing city called Firozabad. He also added several structures in the complex including a Madrasa, a Mosque and a royal residence.

The Hauz Khas Fort complex showcases a blend of Islamic and Indian architectural influences. The structures within the complex feature intricate carvings, decorative elements and geometric patterns, reflecting the architectural skill of the Tughlaq dynasty. Over time, the Hauz Khas Fort complex fell into a state of neglect. However, efforts have been made in recent years to restore and preserve its historical and architectural significance.
