Adiyogi Shiva Statue is the biggest Sculpture dedicated to the famous Hindu deity, Shiva. This huge sculpture is situated amidst lush green farms in the foothills of Velliangiri Mountains at Isha Yoga Complex in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. It was Inaugurated by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on 24 February 2017 on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri.

Adiyogi or Shiva (Shankara) means ‘The First Yogi’. This sculpture was designed by Sadhguru, the founder and head of the Isha Foundation. It was built with the aim to inspire and encourage the practice of yoga. The Guinness World Record has recognised this statue as the “Largest Statue Sculpture ” in the world which is 34.3 metre (112 ft.) tall, 45 metre (147 ft) long and 25 metre (82 ft) wide. Adiyogi’s 112 ft height stands for 112 paths to reach moksha or freedom as mentioned in yogic teachings.

There’s also a famous Dhyanalinga temple inside the complex. During the placement of Sculpture, the Yogeshwar Linga was placed in front of the Sculpture through the ceremony of pran pratishtha. The temple also hosts a special light and sound show about Shiva as Yogi, which was inaugurated by Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India.

Adiyogi is a popular tourist destination attracting visitors from around the world for its spiritual and aesthetic significance. It shows the importance of yoga, meditation and spirituality in one’s life. The place offers a rich cultural experience hosting various spiritual programs and practices. The Isha Foundation is also planning to build three more such statues in Varanasi, Mumbai and Delhi.

It is believed that over 15,000 years ago, Adiyogi shared his wisdom with seven disciples, the Saptarishis, who later passed on this knowledge worldwide. In ancient teachings, Shiva is seen as the first teacher with his lessons enduring through time, inspiring people to aim for their best.

The Adiyogi Shiva Statue is full of symbolic features. At the base, it’s 147 feet around, and at the shoulders, it’s 76.8 feet wide. On its head, there’s a crown with seven snakes, standing for the different parts of yoga. It also has a third eye on its forehead, showing wisdom and understanding. You’ll spot a crescent moon on top, representing how time passes and life changes. In one hand, there’s a trident, which stands for creation, protection, and destruction. Another hand holds a drum, symbolizing the start of life’s rhythm. And in the last hand, there’s fire, showing how things can change and be set free.

The Adiyogi Statue’s 112 ft height has a significance as it represents the 112 paths to attain moksha (liberation) and the 112 energy points in the human body called chakras, according to Yogic Philosophy. This huge sculpture is made with 500 tonnes of Steel and 1,400 tonnes of concrete and is built to last for ages and survive natural disasters.

The design of the statue is remarkable as this sculpture faces towards south, which is uncommon for Hindu deities as most faces north or east. This unique positioning symbolises the concept of dissolution of death as Shiva is the lord of dissolution.

During the statue’s construction, a linga named Yogeshwar Linga was consecrated beside it, adding to its spiritual significance. This Linga is unique as it doesn’t have a heart chakra (Anahata), symbolising a state beyond emotions rather than being heartless. It does have five other chakras-root, sacral, solar plexus, throat and third eyes, each with six dimensions.
