About National Rail Museum Delhi
National Rail Museum Delhi Spreading in 11 acres of area was established in 1977 with the aim to Preserve and showcase the rich heritage and history of India’s Railway Network which is also world’s largest Rail network. The Museum is operated by the ministry of Railways and Govt. of India. The museum houses the vast collection of railways artifacts, engines, coaches and other equipment which have been well maintained and restored. The Outdoor gallery of the Museum showcases variety of steam, Diesel and electric locomotives including the world’s oldest working steam engine, Fairy Queen and also royal saloons, wagons, etc. while Indoor Gallery displays the significant stories of the early modes of transportation, historical photographs, documents, railway artifacts, etc.
The Museum also has a joy train and mini railway track which demonstrates the working of Railway engines. The National Rail Museum is Must visit destination for railway enthusiasts and families who wants to witness the evolution of Indian Railway System and it’s role in shaping the country history and Development.
History Of National Rail Museum Delhi
The idea of the Transport Museum was proposed in 1962 and it is in 1970 that the idea took shape under the advisory of Rail Enthusiast Michael Graham. On 7th October 1971 then President of India Shri V.V Giri laid the foundation of the National Rail Museum at it’s present site in Chanakyapuri, Delhi. After 6 years of Work, the Museum was inaugurated by then Railway Minister Shri Kamlapati Tripathi as the “Rail Transport Museum”. Originally, the Museum was intended to cover the history of Railways, Roadways, Airways and Waterways but this didn’t happened and Museum was later renamed as National Rail Museum in 1995.
Inside National Rail Museum Delhi
- Indoor Gallery: Inside the Indoor gallery of Rail Museum Delhi, you will go back 160 years in the past where you will see different types of signaling Instrument, Indian Railways uniform, Telecommunication systems used in Indian Railways and antique Railway Furniture, etc. You will also see the Models of Coach, engine and steam locomotive.
- Outdoor Gallery: The outdoor section of the museum look like a railway yard where variety of engines and coaches including steam, electric and Diesel locomotive are on display. The outdoor section also has beautiful collection of wagons, Carriages, rail cars and armored trains which are not a model but the original exhibits.
- Royal Collection: National Rail Museum Delhi also show us the royal lifestyle of then Kings and Queen. The Museum has on display, Saloon of Prince of Wales, Maharaja of Mysore’s Saloon and saloon of Maharaja of Indore.
- Rides and 3D Simulators: The Rail Museum gives you an opportunity to enjoy a ride on Toy Train and Joy Train which will make you relive your childhood days. There is also a virtual 3D ride which you can take in Indoor Section of the Museum.

National Rail Museum has exhibits of many rails and engines, some of the Popular exhibits are mentioned below:
- Fairy Queen: This is the most famous exhibit at National Rail Museum. It is the oldest steam locomotive in Working Condition.
- Fire Engine: This engine was built by John Morris and sons Ltd of Salford. There are just 2 of these engines known to exist till date of which one is showcased here and other is preserved by the whitewebbs Museums of Transport, London.
- Patiala State Monorail Trainways: This Unique Monorail was built in 1907. This train consists of single rail Track, it was closed on October 1927.
- Electric Locomotive 4502: It is one of the first generation 1500V DC locomotive Engine. It is also known as khakis (crabs) because of the moaning sound it makes while at rest. It Was in Operation till 1994 at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
- Betty Tramways: This was owned by Rajkot-Beti Tramways and used to ran in Rajkot.
- Saloon of Prince of Wales: This Saloon car was built for Prince of Wales’s Visit to India.
- Saloon of Maharaja of Indore: This was the saloon car of Maharaja of Indore.
- Saloon of Maharaja of Mysore: This was the saloon car of Maharaja of Mysore.
