Cubbon Park, also known as Sri. Chamarajendra Park, is a historic park located in Bangalore. Established in 1870, the park is named after Sir Mark Cubbon, the former British Commissioner of Mysore. Spread in over 300 acres of area, the park has over 6,000 species of plants and trees. History Of Cubbon Park Bangalore
Cubbon Park was built in 1870 by the British Chief Engineer of Mysore State, Major General Richard Sankey. Initially, the park was spread over 100 acres of area and was later expanded to 300 acres of land. The park has changed its name several times. Firstly, the park was named Meade’s Park after Sir John Meade in 1870. Then, it was renamed as Cubbon Park after Sir Mark Cubbon. In 1970, the park was finally renamed as Sri Chamarajendra Park to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar. However, most people know the park as Cubbon Park.
Cubbon Park is currently maintained by the Horticulture Department of the Karnataka Government. In 1979, the state government passed a Preservation Act that restricted that no constructions will be allowed in the park and told that no other land will be granted for any further constructions. The park is under the Central Administrative Area (CAA) of the Government which also includes the Vidhana Soudha Garden, Cubbon Park, Queen’s Park, Children Park, Bamboo Groves and the Legislature Home Garden.
