Guindy National Park Chennai is one of the smallest national parks in India, located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Established in 1977, it was originally a part of the Guindy Forest Reserve.

History Of Guindy National Park Chennai
Guindy National Park used to be a vast tropical dry evergreen forest stretching over 5 square kilometres. This area used to serve various purposes over the years. Initially, it was used as a hunting ground by the British during the colonial period. In the 1670s, Governor William Langhorne made part of it into a garden and built a residence, the Guindy Lodge. This place became a nice spot for relaxing. The remaining forest was owned by a Britisher, Gilbert Rodericks until the government purchased the forest in 1821 for a sum of Rs 35,000.
Between 1961 and 1972, around 172 hectares of the forest, mostly near Raj Bhavan, were given to different government departments for building educational institutions and memorials. In 1958, some part of the forest land was given to the Union Education Ministry to create Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. During the same year, some other part of land was given to the Forest Department to make the Guindy Deer Park and Children’s Park, after the suggestion of then Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Guindy Snake Park which was once known as Madras Crocodile Bank Trust, is situated next to Guindy National Park. It got recognition as Medium Zoo by the Central Zoo Authority in 1995. The park has various reptiles such as Pythons, Vipers, King Cobras and others. You can also see creatures like Tortoises, Turtles, Lizards and Geckos. In addition, the park also exhibits reptiles like Crocodiles, Turtles, Lizards and snakes of different kinds. There’s also a museum showcasing specimens of Reptiles and Amphibians.

One of the unique attractions is a fossilised tree which dates back 20 million years. The park offers fun activities like swings, Elephant and Pony rides, and a mini railway.
Children’s Park of Guindy National Park has a separate area from Snake Park, with its own entrance and ticket. It is located on busy Sardar Patel Road near Adyar Cancer Institute, the park provides facilities like water, snacks, and catering. In December 2019, they introduced an exciting augmented reality show for visitors.
